Is It Time to Straighten Your Teeth? 7 Signs It May Be Time for Orthodontic Treatment

<< All Blogs
August 5, 2026

National Align Your Teeth Day is August 11, and it’s a great reminder that a healthy, confident smile can make a lasting difference!

But how do you know when it’s actually time to see an orthodontist?

Maybe you’ve noticed your teeth shifting. Maybe your bite doesn’t feel quite right anymore. Or maybe you’ve always wondered whether braces or Invisalign® could help.

The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone.

At Fellow Orthodontist, our board-certified Manhattan orthodontist, Dr. Lin, helps patients of all ages understand what’s happening with their smiles and whether orthodontic treatment would truly benefit them.

Here are seven common signs it may be time to schedule a consultation:

Quick Smile Check: How many of these sound like you?

Not sure whether it’s time to see an orthodontist? Do a quick self-check.

If you find yourself saying “yes” to one or more of these, it may be worth scheduling a consultation to learn about your options.

☐ My teeth look crooked or more crowded than they used to.
☐ I have noticeable gaps between my teeth.
☐ My teeth have shifted since I finished braces years ago.
☐ My bite feels different when I chew or bite down.
☐ I have an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or another bite issue.
☐ I avoid smiling in photos or feel self-conscious about my smile.
☐ My child has crowded teeth, bite problems, or was told they may eventually need braces.

How’d you do?

If you checked even one or two boxes, don’t panic! it doesn’t automatically mean you need braces or Invisalign.

It simply means your smile may be worth evaluating.

During your consultation, Dr. Lin will examine your teeth, bite, and jaw development, explain what they’re seeing, and help you understand whether orthodontic treatment could benefit you now or in the future. No pressure. Just answers.

7 Signs You May Need Braces or Invisalign Clear Aligners

1. Your Teeth Are Crooked, Crowded, or Twisted

This is the sign most people notice first.

If teeth overlap, rotate, or don’t have enough room, they can be more difficult to brush and floss properly. Crowding can also affect how your teeth fit together and may become more noticeable over time.

Whether your teeth are only slightly crooked or significantly crowded, today’s orthodontic treatment options are more comfortable and discreet than ever before.

2. You Have Gaps Between Your Teeth

Some spacing is completely normal. But larger gaps can affect how your teeth function, how your bite distributes pressure, and for many people, how confident they feel when smiling.

Orthodontic treatment can often close unwanted spacing while creating a healthier bite.

3. Your Bite Doesn’t Feel Right

Sometimes people don’t notice crooked teeth, they notice their bite.

You may find yourself thinking:

“My front teeth hit before my back teeth.”
“My teeth don’t seem to line up anymore.”
“Chewing feels different than it used to.”

If your bite feels different, there’s often an underlying orthodontic reason worth evaluating.

4. You Have an Overbite, Underbite, or Other Bite Problem

Straight teeth are only part of the picture. Orthodontists also focus on how your upper and lower jaws fit together.

Treatment may help correct:

  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Open bites

Correcting bite problems can improve comfort, chewing efficiency, long-term tooth wear, and smile aesthetics.

5. Your Teeth Have Shifted Since Braces

Had braces in the past but noticing your teeth shifting again? Unfortunately, teeth shifting can happen when you stop wearing your retainer.

IIf you haven’t worn your retainers consistently since having braces, you may notice small changes that gradually become larger ones.

The good news is that many adults can smile confidently again with an Invisalign Touch-Up treatment or braces, even if they’ve had orthodontic treatment before.

6. You’re Hiding Your Smile

Sometimes the biggest sign isn’t physical; it’s emotional.

If you avoid smiling in photos, cover your mouth when laughing, or feel self-conscious during conversations, orthodontic treatment may be about much more than straight teeth.

A smile you’re proud of can make a lasting difference in your confidence every day.

7. Your Child Is Showing Signs of Bite or Jaw Development Issues

Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for teenagers. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation around age 7.

That doesn’t necessarily mean your child needs braces right away. In many cases, Dr. Lin simply monitors growth as permanent teeth come in, through our Kids Club!

When early intervention is beneficial, treatments such as palatal expansion can help guide jaw development and create room for permanent teeth.

Early evaluations allow problems to be identified before they become more complicated.

What if you’re not sure you need orthodontic treatment?

That’s actually one of the most common reasons people visit us.

You don’t need to know whether you need braces. You don’t need to know whether Invisalign would work. You don’t even need to know if treatment is necessary.

That’s what we’re here for!

During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your teeth, bite, jaw development, and smile goals before making personalized recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need braces or Invisalign?

The best way to know is through an orthodontic evaluation. Crooked teeth, spacing, bite problems, shifting teeth, or crowding are all common signs that orthodontic treatment may help.

Should I get Invisalign or braces?

It depends on your smile, bite, lifestyle, and treatment goals. Both Invisalign and braces can successfully treat many orthodontic issues. Your orthodontist will recommend the option that’s best for your specific case.

Why do people need braces?

People get braces for many reasons, including crooked teeth, crowding, gaps, overbites, underbites, crossbites, jaw alignment concerns, and improving overall oral health and confidence.

Can adults get Invisalign?

Absolutely. Invisalign is a popular option for adults because the clear aligners are removable, comfortable, and nearly invisible.

Many adults choose an Invisalign Touch-Up treatment to straighten teeth that have shifted over time.

What age should my child see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation around age 7. Early evaluations allow orthodontists to monitor growth and determine whether treatment is needed now or later.

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?

No. You can schedule a consultation directly with your Fellow Orthodontist. No referral is required.
