Can you fix a gummy smile without surgery?

<< All Blogs
April 15, 2024

So you’ve become more aware of your gums lately? Maybe you’re noticing “long gums” or “big gums” but aren’t quite sure what this condition is called. Or maybe you’re two steps ahead and you’re already searching for “gummy smile treatment near me!”

Either way, you’re in the right place. Here’s everything you need to know about gummy smile correction from your Fellow Orthodontist in Union Square, Manhattan.

(Spoiler alert: Yes, Dr. Lin can fix a gummy smile without surgery!)

What is a gummy smile?

A “gummy smile” may be the phrase you’re looking for. Otherwise known as “excessive gingival display” or a “hyperactive upper lip”, gummy smiles are present when 2 millimeters or more of your gum tissue is visible.

Gummy Smile Causes

What causes a gummy smile in the first place? Gummy smiles can result from:

  • Genetics
  • Hyperactive lip muscles
  • Abnormal jaw growth
  • Poor tooth eruption
  • Certain medications
  • Medical conditions

How is a gummy smile fixed?

We understand that our patients want to avoid surgery at all costs, and we do too! Fortunately, Dr. Lin can fix a gummy smile without surgery by using TADs (temporary anchorage devices) during orthodontic treatment.

How do TADs work?
TAD orthodontic appliances are small screws that are secured in the jaw bone, serving as an anchor that guides teeth into a healthy alignment and reduces the appearance of gum tissues.

Using TADs for gummy smile correction is the least invasive approach that doesn’t require you to undergo extensive jaw surgery.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You complete your consultation with Dr. Lin. You can start by coming in for an in-office consultation, or start the process from home with a virtual consultation or smile assessment via text.
  2. Dr. Lin will examine your smile in person to develop your personalized treatment plan. If this is the best treatment route for you, your treatment plan will include TADs appliance, along with orthodontic treatment of Invisalign® or braces.
  3. Dr. Lin will explain the process in detail to ensure that you’re comfortable and informed every step of the way.
  4. At the end of orthodontic treatment, Dr. Lin contours the hard and soft tissues around the smile to ensure a stunning smile and a balanced appearance.
  5. Your gummy smile is now an incredible smile that transforms your confidence!

Get started today.

Let’s create a plan that reduces excess gum tissue and balances your teeth-to-gum ratio. You deserve to smile confidently for a lifetime.

Average treatment time ranges from 15-20 months for gummy smile and orthodontic treatment, which means this time next year, you could be months away from your dream smile. Otherwise, you’ll be dreaming of a better smile for the next 15-20 years!

See what you can expect when you get started, and take the first step today.
